An emotional TV interview with motivational former Welsh Rugby Union publicity officer Gethin Jones clearly unsettled him.
Craig Maxwell, director, has been told he has terminal cancer. Maxwellland, 41, was given 10 to 18 months to live when word of his fatal illness first surfaced in July. Read more about it by going here.
He spent many years in a similar position at the WRU before taking on the post of commercial director at the Six Nations.
Maxwell’s 78-day diagnosis period might be shortened with a blood test that might identify and isolate certain cancer DNA, doing away with the necessity for invasive biopsies.
The QuicDNA project was estimated to be worth £300,000 when Maxwell learned about it, so the Tenby native made the decision to attempt to gather the funds on his own. “I mentioned that I would raise £300,000 for you,”
stated during the BBC Morning Show. "I instantly regretted it, wondering how I would ever raise £300,000! I therefore reasoned that the best method for me to raise funds would be to make a clear statement to my children about how much I will be missing from their life.
I miss this wonderful time when I can guide and impact them, and maybe I can do it with deeds instead of words.
In order to raise money, Maxwell climbed fifteen Welsh peaks in a single day and finished the London Marathon, a 500-mile bicycle trip from Cardiff to Paris.
“I want the kids to see that dad didn’t accept it (the diagnosis), that he really tried to push back and fight back,” Maxwell said.
I’m scared of that more than anything else; it’s not about losing my mortality or what will happen to me in the future. “And what they see, they are still young, and what they remember.”
Jones said the following about her buddy after their interview: “And I am in awe of Craigand’s strength and her determination to help other families who are in the same situation as hers.”
It’s too late for him, and he knows it. She still wakes up every day, though, to continue her campaign, raise money, and find a means to receive an early diagnosis that might have an impact in the future.
He will succeed, I’m sure of it. He transforms people’s life. Tracy and her kids will always be able to take pride in this legacy.
Returningto the studio after playing the package, Jones was visibly shocked and amazed by Maxwell, taking a deep breath and Craig at a loss for words. The head is incredible, he does incredible things and changes lives, I’m sure.
Maxwell has now raised around £1 million through his amazing efforts.
