Kansas city man charged in shooting at apartments that left 45 yearsold resident dead.
Jackson County prosecutors said on Friday that a 28-year-old man is charged with murder and three other offenses in connection with bullets that killed a resident of a Kansas City apartment complex in late November. Kequan O. Herring, of Kansas City, is accused by prosecutors of two charges of armed criminal action, unauthorized weapon use, and second-degree felony murder. Calvin L. Boyles, 45, was inside the apartment complex in Kansas City’s Central Blue Valley neighborhood when Herring is reported to have opened fire. in the early hours of Nov. 28. Neighbors said Boyles was not “the intended target” of the a Kansas City police detective’s probable cause affidavit supporting Herring’s criminal charges states that the shooting occurred. Police from Kansas City were called to the shooting scene in the 1900 block of Park Tower Road just after midnight. Boyles was discovered inside a house with gunshot wounds. At the scene, he was declared deceased. According to the affidavit, detectives and crime scene investigators located 23 expended shot casings on a hill close to the building’s rear entrance, which is where Boyles was found. Boyles’ apartment walls had obvious bullet wounds in them. The investigators were led by witnesses to a lady who, months prior to the incident, had been “actively feuding” with Herring. She told about Herring’s uncomfortable meeting with her at a petrol station the afternoon before the shooting, where he and several others were carrying guns. According to the affidavit, she later claimed to have learned that her house and her neighbor’s car had been “shot up.” Investigators looked at CCTV footage from a gas station that purports to show Herring entering the business. The affidavit said he and others were observed driving a gray vehicle. Herring denied having anything to do with the shootings when questioned by the police. Herring has a $300,000 cash bond and was being held at the Jackson County jail.
