Alun Wyn Jones revealed he was diagnosed with a heart condition towards the end of his rugby career.

Alun Wyn Jones retired from rugby in November but he was diagnosed with atrial-fibrillation, a heart conditions, in the summer; Jones didn’t play in the Rugby World Cup after retiring from international competition in May

Jones announced his retirement from rugby in May. He had joined Toulon in the summer and had ended his career in November.

The 38-year-old is the player with the most caps for his country, having made an unprecedented 158 appearances for Wales.

“Atrial fibrillation was identified as my condition. When I joined Toulon in July on a short-term contract as cover for the World Cup, it was revealed after I completed a thorough medical examination, which included an ECG test,” Jones told The Telegraph.

“The cardiac physician noticed it right away. My heartbeat like a six-legged horse charging. It covered the entire store.

It happens in sports like rowing and endurance sports, and the factors that trigger it for someone my age are probably cardiovascular exercise and stress. Still, it was shocking because I have always taken great interest in my physical fitness. I’ve always been really dedicated to working out after games, improving my fitness, and getting better from injuries.”

Jones, who spent 18 years at Ospreys after starting his professional rugby career in 2004 with Swansea, underwent heart surgery last month to treat the issue.

The Welshman, who was aware of the illness, talked to his family about it, followed medical advice, and played for Toulon from July to November.

In order to identify any problems, he hopes that more athletes will undergo cardiac exams.

“There is a lot of talk about welfare in rugby at the minute, but does that cover everything?” asked Jones.

Are they only items that we can afford? Undoubtedly, the sport has advanced to the point where athletes ought to be examined more frequently, particularly in light of the rising demands on the sport.

“I consider myself really fortunate that it did, and I will always be appreciative to Toulon for signing me. I might not have learned about the cardiac problem if they hadn’t made me a contract offer.”
