Ange Postecoglou believes Tottenham will do their January transfer business earlier than usual after the club were hit by another injury blow.
Cristian Romero, the center defender for Tottenham, will not play on Thursday night against Brighton due to a hamstring problem that will keep him out of action for four to five weeks.
Romero joins a list of injured players that already includes James Maddison, Pape Sarr, and Micky van de Ven. Yves Bissouma, the captain, and Pape Sarr will both be out next month due to international obligations at the Asia Cup and Africa Cup of Nations.
Tottenham has a reputation for being busy on the day of the winter transfer window. Earlier this year, they signed Pedro Porro, and in 2022, they made a double move for Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski.
Postecoglou, however, stated: “It’s obviously great for us if we can do business early.” Not only is Romero gone, but there’s still an entire month left; why squander it?
It’s not like we’re going to sign someone and have them play right away, so if you can get them in early, you can ease them into training and our football philosophy.
There are a lot of moving pieces, so if you wait until the end of January, it could not be until the middle to end of February before they catch up, depending on where they’re coming from and the league they’re in.
“Well, certainly, I would want to do something early in the window, but even I acknowledge that this presents a difficulty for us, since other clubs are aware of our desire to act early.
“You’ve got to play the game, we’ll see what happens but I’m hopeful it will be much earlier than the end of the window before we bring someone in.”
Spurs have a lengthy list of potential center-back targets, but they are also interested in Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo.
Romero’s injury carries over Tottenham’s pattern of returning one player before adding another to the treatment list; Destiny Udogie is fit to play against Brighton following his suspension.
On Sunday, Postecoglou’s club will also play Bournemouth at home, but the Australian has been pleased with”When all these players come back,” someone had already stated, and I had said, ‘it never works that way.'”
