In a controversial move, the Michigan Supreme Court has ruled that former President Donald Trump’s name will appear on its primary ballot for the 2024 presidential election.
The Republican candidate was declared ineligible for office by the Colorado Supreme Court nearly two weeks prior. The court’s decision was based on the U.S. Constitution’s insurrection clause in the 14th Amendment, which forbids anyone who “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” from running for office. On the Michigan Supreme Court, out of seven judges, just one judge dissented. Though she would have kept Trump on the ballot, Democratic Justice Elizabeth M. Welch stated that she thinks the Section 3 challenge should be the deciding factor. The Court’s ruling has angered a number of people, especially considering its 4-3 Democratic majority.
Ron Fein, the legal director of the leftist organization Free Speech for People, stated, “We are disappointed by the Michigan Supreme Court’s decision.” “The decision goes against long-standing precedent set by the U.S. Supreme Court, which states that political parties must adhere to all constitutional requirements in the primary process when using state election machinery to choose candidates for the general election.”
Free Speech for People had already sued to prevent Trump from running for office again. The move, however, was not successful. Additionally, the organization is trying to prevent Trump’s name from appearing on the ballots in Oregon and Minnesota.
Trump reportedly expressed his happiness with Michigan’s decision on the alt-tech social media network Truth Social, according to Forbes.
Trump said, “The Desperate Democrat attempt to remove me, the front-runner in the 2024 Presidential Election, from the ballot in the Great State of Michigan has been strongly and rightfully denied by the Michigan Supreme Court.” “This pitiful attempt to rig the election has failed nationwide, even in states that have historically favored the Democrats.”
