Moyes shows West Ham love with Lopetegui plan

West Ham legend Frank McAvennie says it is a display of the type of man David Moyes is that he plans to meet with his successor Julen Lopetegui.

Moyes departed the Irons for a second time at the end of the season after a five-year stint that saw him lead the club to the Europa Conference League in 2023.

Former Real Madrid, Spain and Wolves boss Lopetegui was chosen as the man to succeed Moyes and the Spaniard shared that he plans to meet Moyes in person having exchanged messages already with the Scot (Daily Mirror, 2 July).

McAvennie admits to having had reservations over Moyes’ managerial style in the past but hailed him for harbouring no ill feelings towards his former club.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, he said: “Well David’s a good lad, we always knew that, he’ll help him any way he can that’s just David, that’s who he is.

“It’s (leaving West Ham not nothing to do with him (Lopetegui), he’s a football manager, it’s nothing to do with Lopetegui, it’s David Sullivan and people behind the scenes David will have a problem with.

“With the new manager, I imagine David will help him any way he can, that’s a mark of the man. And it doesn’t matter what people think, he loves West Ham so he will help in any way he can.

“I’m so pleased the manager put a hand out for him because why not? He was there and done things and one thing he wanted to do was the best for West Ham.

“Sometimes it was the wrong way and I thought it was the wrong way with the defending, especially with no good defenders, I couldn’t work that out. But that’s the way it is.

“I’m delighted because he loves West Ham and he’ll help any way he can, that’s the way it should be it’s nothing to do with the manager coming in. It’s the owners and that’s where David will be a bit wee upset.

“But he does love West Ham, it’s time to move and they’ve done that.”

Great West Ham gesture from David Moyes

By the end of his tenure at the London Stadium, Moyes seemingly split Hammers fans right down the middle.

There was a feeling that, yes, he had enjoyed some success at the club – not least that European triumph – but that with the squad at his disposal, the entertainment value should have been much higher.

David Moyes will be remembered fondly by West Ham supporters.

So, it felt like a sort of inevitable parting of ways when he departed but it is fantastic to see him offering his help to his successor Lopetegui.

No matter what any supporter thinks of his style of play, that sort of gesture should be applauded by everyone at the club.
