Carlos Corberan will focus fully on proceeding with the West Bromwich Albion squad at his disposal after the club’s recruitment drive in the transfer window brought with it a glut of new faces to replace the many who departed over the course of the summer.
Albion were busy right up until the transfer deadline at the end of August; they secured the permanent acquisition of Mikey Johnston and the loan signing – for the second time – of Mason Holgate, both of who were paraded in front of The Hawthorns at half time in Albion’s 1-0 win over Swansea City prior to the international break.
The Baggies also added midfielder Uros Racic and the versatile Callum Styles in the latter stages of the window to satisfy Corberan, who required reinforcements in order to shape a squad fit for a promotion tilt. He’s has worked with the assembled group during this international break as they seek to build on their impressive start to the campaign.
“Football is about this, it is about players. Good players with bad coaches can win titles. They don’t depend [on a coach]. Normally very good coaches without players does not win titles, never, normally a title is when you have a good combination between good players and coaches. Here we don’t have a very good coach, so let’s try to have the best players!”
Johnston, meanwhile, has returned having initially moved back to Celtic in May; Albion were able to agree a deal with the Bhoys before the deadline and he has re-entered the dressing room to many new faces who he’s excited to get up and running with.
“Maybe what we didn’t have last year was strength in depth, maybe through injuries a lot of the time and other things happening,” he said. “I think we’ve got a lot of options and it’s good for everyone, it means everyone’s got to be firing all the time and ready to play and take their chances.
“I want to hit the ground running again. I feel like I improved a lot under the manager straight away and was getting better and better. I know at the end of the season there wasn’t enough goals but I was in the positions and doing the right things. I feel I can kick on again and be an even better player. Physically I feel even better than I have for a couple of years. I feel like I’m getting better and better.”
