Michigan defensive tackle Kris Jenkins declares for 2024 NFL Draft

Star defender from Michigan is headed to the NFL.

With the 2024 NFL Draft declaration deadline drawing near, another Michigan player has added his name to the prospect pool. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, it’s senior defensive tackle Kris Jenkins this time.

Following an incredible 2022 campaign, Jenkins made the decision to return to Michigan for his senior year. Jenkins was a standout on Michigan’s defensive line in his junior year, recording 54 tackles and 3.5 stops for a loss. For his first full season as a starter, he was recognized by the coaches and media with honorable mentions on the All-Big Ten team.

Last year, after considering the draft, Jenkins decided to go back to Michigan and try to win a national championship. Jenkins’s gamble paid off because, had he decided to enter the draft the previous season, he probably would have been selected on days two or three. But before he turns pro, he’ll undoubtedly be happy to add another Big Ten Championship and a National Championship to his record.

In addition, Jenkins recorded 37 more tackles and 2.5 sacks during his senior season, which helped him earn additional All-Big Ten recognition (second-team coaches; third-team media).

Although Jenkins and Michigan both had successful seasons, the senior did occasionally lose out to sophomores Kenneth Grant and Mason Graham, who both had breakthrough campaigns. Jenkins also experienced a slight decline in production during the season due to a lower body injury.

However, Jenkins should do well in the draft because of his size, athleticism, and experience. Jenkins may be a top-50 pick and is still Mel Kiper’s No. 5 defensive tackle in the draft, according to Thamel.

Jenkins has decided to turn pro, joining fellow Michigan defensive standouts Jaylen Harrell and Junior Colson. With Graham and Grant returning for the upcoming season, Michigan’s defensive line is still in very good hands.
