This offseason, Monkell Goodwine became the first transfer from Alabama to choose a different SEC school.
Monkell Goodwine, a former defensive lineman for Alabama, announced his transfer to South Carolina on Sunday.
Goodwine made his decision known on Instagram a week after logging into the NCAA transfer portal.
Despite being ranked No. 123 in the country for the 2021 class, Goodwine, a redshirt sophomore from Maryland, played in just five games during his three seasons with Alabama. This past weekend he traveled to South Carolina.

Alabama 2024 transfer portal, NFL draft tracker: What’s next for Tide after Rose Bowl loss?
The deadline for Alabama’s undergraduate players to access the transfer portal is this coming Sunday.
The Alabama 2023 season is finished.
After falling to Michigan 27–20 in overtime, the Tide embarks on a new journey during the offseason. Alabama has failed to win a national championship for three straight seasons for the first time since Nick Saban took over as head coach.
What comes next? A 2024 team that will play in the new 16-team SEC and attempt to make the first 12-team playoff will be shaped during the first two weeks of January, from the transfer portal to NFL draft selections and possible coaching staff changes.
First, let’s discuss the transfer portal. The transfer portal for college football undergraduate players ends on Monday, but bowl teams have a five-day window after their last game. This implies that while graduate players can access the portal at any time, undergraduate Alabama players will have until Saturday to do so. April 16–30 is when the second undergraduate window will open.
After four players entered the portal in early December—wide receiver Ja’Corey Brooks, defensive linemen Isaiah Hastings and Anquin Barnes, and quarterback Tyler Buchner—there is no doubt that Alabama players will do so this week. With over 90 scholarship players projected for the upcoming season, the Tide will have to trim its roster to 85 scholarships, the maximum allowed by the NCAA.
The NFL draft comes next. Four juniors from Alabama are predicted to go in the first round of the NFL draft. The deadline for underclassmen with at least three years of college experience to enter the draft is January 15. Dallas Turner, one of them, has already declared his intention to depart. The two other juniors to keep an eye on are offensive tackle JC Latham and cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Kool-Aid McKinstry. However, Alabama has a number of other eligible freshmen who may declare but are very unlikely to do so.
The coaching staff comes next. The only confirmed change thus far is that Coleman Hutzler, the special teams coordinator and coach of the outside linebackers, will be moving to Mississippi State to take over as defensive coordinator, barring a dramatic decision from Nick Saban to step down.
