Jim Harbaugh is free to take over as head coach of the Chargers. This is the perfect time for Harbaugh to make a comeback to the NFL if he plans to do so. He could coach one of the top quarterbacks in the league and rejoin the Chargers, the team he once played for.
The addition of Harbaugh and a new general manager will usher in a new phase of Chargers football history. Harbaugh has been a successful coach in every position he has held throughout his career, and with Herbert on his side, a Super Bowl victory would be realistic.
But Harbaugh will need to assemble a team of outstanding coaches around him because he cannot succeed by himself. If Harbaugh joins the Bolts, he should have these guys filling the coordinator positions since he would have total control over his coaching staff.
Ryan Ficken is the Chargers’ ideal special teams coordinator under Jim Harbaugh.
Don’t fix anything if it ain’t broke.
For the Chargers, Ryan Ficken has been a revelation. He has improved the team’s special teams from among the worst in league history to among the best in the current NFL. There’s no reason for Harbaugh to choose someone else when Ficken has performed at such a high caliber.
Could Harbaugh bring in one of “his guys” and could politics get in the way? Yes. However, Ficken has more than fulfilled his duties in recent years, so the Chargers don’t need to start over on that side of the ball.
The Chargers turned down the New York Giants’ request for an interview, indicating their desire to keep Ficken around for the upcoming campaign. If the team were to hire him, Harbaugh would undoubtedly have the last say, but it is encouraging that Ficken will be back.
