Many other Huskies staff members have traveled to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to assist former Washington head football coach Kalen DeBoer in his coaching of the Crimson Tide.
This continued on Monday night, as John Brice of Football Scoop reported that DeBoer and associates planned to appoint Washington defensive assistant William Inge to a comparable role.
On December 18, 2021, Inge was hired by Washington to serve as the linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator. After working as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Fresno State for the previous two seasons, he was reunited with Husky head coach Kalen DeBoer.
The Huskies’ run to the College Football National Championship this past season is evidence that Inge was a key player on one of the most exciting teams to watch on both sides of the ball.
Throughout his first season with Washington, Inge made a noticeable impact as well; the defense improved from No. 108 in rushing defense the previous year to No. 25 in 2022. Two of Inge’s linebackers, Cam Bright and Alphonzo Tuputala, were honorable mentions on the All-Pac-12 team.
In terms of scoring defense, tackles for loss, takeaways, fumble recoveries, and third-down conversion defense at Fresno State in 2021, the Bulldogs were among the top 25 in the country.

Since succeeding Nick Saban, Alabama Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer hasn’t wasted any time trying to maintain the program at the top of the college football hierarchy.
The former Huskies coach has established his two primary coordinators thus far. Ryan Grubb, the former offensive coordinator for the Washington Huskies, made the most significant decision when he chose to relocate to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, halfway across the nation.
Grubb spent five seasons with Fresno State before beginning his second season with Washington. The Huskies finished second in the nation in 2022 with an average of 515.8 yards per game, behind only Tennessee, and seventh in 2022 with an average of 39.7 points per game.
Grubb assisted Michael Penix Jr.’s development last year.He was the mastermind behind the second-best passing offense in college football, only surpassed by Oregon, with an average of 347.7 passing yards per game and 38 passing touchdowns by the end of the season.
The idea that he could elevate Jalen Milroe’s game should excite Alabama supporters.
Ironically, Grubb declined the OC post to remain with DeBoer in Washington after interviewing with the Alabama Crimson Tide in January.
Kalen DeBoer brought in South Alabama head coach Kane Wommack to help with the defense.
The new defensive coordinator began his coaching career at Tennessee-Martin, Jacksonville State, and Ole Miss after playing at Arkansas and Southern Miss.
Before going back to being the head coach in 2021, he was the DC and coach of the USA’s linebackers in 2016 and 2017. He is now staying in the state to fill the void left by Kevin Steele’s retirement.
“It is really exciting that I will now have more because I have always found a way to do more with less,” Wommack remarked. “However, we must determine the functionality and optimal fit of those components.”
Following his appointment, Wommack talked with AL.com about what supporters of the Crimson Tide can anticipate from him in the role of head coach Kalen DeBoer.
“I believe my ability to understand that players need to produce is what makes me a good defensive coordinator,” Wommack stated.
“To ensure that you maximize a young man’s opportunity at the next level and also create the best opportunity for you to win games, there is a certain way that you need to call the game.”
Throughout his career, Wommack has employed a 4-2-5 defensive scheme that primarily depends on solid play from the safety position.
