Over the past day, Alabama’s decision to sever its 36-year relationship with broadcaster Eli Gold has sparked a fierce and intense backlash.
It was summed up nicely by Paul Finebaum, who appeared with me on “The Opening Kickoff” on WNSP-FM 105.5 in Mobile.
Finebaum expressed his sadness on Thursday. “There are numerous causes for this. I am not very familiar with the conclusion. Too frequently, we fixate on the why of what happened in the moment. How did this come about? I consider the thirty-six years he dedicated to Alabama.
This man really does resemble Mount Rushmore. You consider Nick Saban, the former coach of Alabama. These days, when you talk about the University of Alabama, you think of Eli Gold in the same sentence. More than anything, there was something that I found depressing about yesterday.
The rumor that John Forney was replaced in 1983 was exposed by Finebaum. Even though there aren’t many parallels between the two, their feelings are still quite similar.
